Dr. Jacobsen thoroughly believes that silicone gel implants are safe for patients. The
safety of using silicone implants has received a great deal of attention over the past 15
years or more. Concerns about connective tissue disease, immunological disorders and
cancer have been the subject of many studies. There has been no evidence that these
disorders are any higher in women with implants, than in those women who do not have
breast implants. Silicone is used in many medical devices including heart valves, total
joint prostheses and various shunts. Silicone is used in intravenous catheters in
hospitals and many other safe medical devices as well. There has been no implication in
these other devices that the silicone is threat to patients. This has only been
implicated in breast implants which are quite curious.
